Getting off the internet

I've recently had my online presents used against me, and as the saying goes "once bitten, twice shy", so I'm now in full swing to get off the internet. Mostly opting for self hosted alternatives, and if anything I'm no longer giving big corporations money which is a great outcome from this.

The biggest alternative I've decided to go with is for my music, even when I was using streaming services, due to my music tastes, a lot of bands were not on there, which meant I had to purchase it anyway (which I'm all for giving the creators money rather than big corporations). So to self host my music collection I now use beets, and to be honest, I don't see myself going back any time soon. This setup actually allows me to finally get around to tagging my music and not relying on a streaming service to do this for me.

The other alternatives are very specific to my use cases, so I wont go into too much detail, as you can imagine, there's a git server, a web server, and some security solutions for that. All of this has not cost me a single penny, and there is no monthly service fee other than electricity.

I've also gone a bit over the top with this. I deleted my Amazon account, mainly because the service is not what it used to be, and the amount of mistake orders I got, it was just not worth it. I still have an eBay account, but very rarely use it. I want 2010's again where i could go to the local shopping centre, see and try before parting with my money.

In the grind scene there is the term "D.I.Y or die", in that its better to do it yourself rather than have someone to do it for you. I think after being part of this scene and recently getting bitten, I've fully embraced the saying.

Its not 100% just yet, I still need to track down and close some services I pay for, but its a step in the right direction.
